Early life and Education
Usha Vance (born January 6th, 1986) is an American lawyer who currently serves as Second Lady of the United States – the first Indian American and Hindu person to hold that role. She was born in San Diego, California and grew up in a suburb called Rancho Peñasquitos. Her parents immigrated from India – her dad worked as a mechanical engineer and her mom became a senior academic leader. Education was a big deal in her family, and Usha certainly lived up to that.
She was a strong student growing up. She graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 2003, and even played flute in the marching band. After that, she went on to some of the most prestigious schools in the country. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Yale University, a master’s degree from the University of Cambridge (as a Gates Cambridge Scholar), and then a law degree from Yale Law School.
Family and Personal Life
Usha Vance met her future husband, JD Vance, at Yale Law School. They became friends while studying there and often spent time together during classes and social events. JD Vance has said that Usha helped him adjust to life at Yale and made the environment feel less intimidating for him. He even called her his “Yale Spirit Guide” because she helped him navigate the school and understand things more easily. Over time, their friendship grew into a romantic relationship, and they got married in 2014. They now have three children together.
Usha Vance is a lawyer with a strong academic background. After Yale, she worked in important legal jobs, including clerking for judges in the federal court system, which is a very competitive position for law graduates. She has balanced her legal career with raising her family while her husband’s political career developed. As JD Vance became more involved in public life, including becoming a U.S. senator, Usha continued focusing on both her work and her home life. The couple has often spoken about the importance of family routines and staying connected even with busy schedules.
Legal Career and Public Service
As a lawyer, she worked in big civil cases and represented major clients such as Paramount Pictures and Disney. She also worked for some of the most important judges in the country, including Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. She resigned from her law firm in July 2024 to support her husband’s campaign, and in 2025. She stepped into public life as Second Lady. She led a U.S. delegation to the Special Olympics in Italy and was appointed to the Kennedy Center board.
Second lady of the United States
As Second Lady, Usha Vance has focused on education and encouraging kids to read. She has traveled internationally with JD Vance, including visits to France and Germany, where she met leaders and visited historic sites like a Holocaust memorial.
In 2025, she launched a Summer Reading Challenge and hosts a kids’ podcast called “Storytime with the Second Lady,” where she reads stories for children. She has also spoken against racist comments about her Indian heritage and emphasizes respect for all people.
