
On September 1–2, 2026, Chapel Hill became a meeting place for some of the most influential figures in technology and international innovation. At the center was Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, who traveled to North Carolina for the G20 Innovation Ministerial at the Carolina Inn. The two-day meeting brought together representatives from the G20 nations. They all discussed artificial intelligence, emerging technology, workforce development and global innovation throughout
Huang was joined by several of the biggest names in the technology industry. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had conversations with Huang, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown and Palantir CEO Alex Karp. Other technology leaders like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis—also participated in the ministerial, but appeared through an online video call.

The reason for bringing these leaders together was bigger than NVIDIA or any single company. The G20 discussions focused on how countries can prepare for an economy increasingly shaped by AI. Huang spoke about the enormous computing infrastructure required for AI and argued that governments should think seriously about building the systems that are in need to support it. The meeting ended with a statement that addressed AI, technical education, intellectual property, and investment in new technologies.

But Huang’s presence in North Carolina is also significant because of where he started. Huang was born in Tainan, Taiwan, and came to the United States as a child. He eventually studied electrical engineering at Oregon State University and earned a master’s degree from Stanford. Before NVIDIA, he worked at semiconductor companies Advanced Micro Devices and LSI Logic. These experiences helped prepare him to enter the rapidly developing computer-chip industry and become one of the best.
In 1993, Huang co-founded NVIDIA, a company that initially focused heavily on computer graphics and gaming. NVIDIA’s invention of the GPU in 1999 eventually became much more important than gaming: the technology’s ability to perform massive amounts of parallel computation helped make modern AI possible. Today, NVIDIA’s chips and computing platforms are at the center of the global AI boom, transforming Huang from a semiconductor entrepreneur into one of the most recognizable Asian American figures in technology.


Huang’s appearance in Chapel Hill showed how his career has grown far beyond NVIDIA. On September 2, he spoke with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick at the Carolina Inn about AI’s growing role in the global economy. Huang described AI as essential infrastructure and pushed G20 countries to invest in data centers and skilled workers. He also argued that governments should focus on real, demonstrated AI risks instead of working on managing hypothetical ones.
The discussion also connected to the growing influence of Asian Americans in the U.S. technology industry. According to the National Science Foundation, 39% of Asian workers were employed in STEM occupations in 2024, the highest share of any racial or ethnic group. Huang’s career reflects this broader contribution, showing how Asian American innovators have become important voices in science, technology and engineering. His presence at the meeting highlighted how Asian American leaders can help shape both American technology and the global future of AI.
By the end of the two-day meeting, G20 ministers had agreed on the Carolina Principles for Emerging Technologies, which promote investment in research, faster commercialization and responsible adoption of new technologies. Huang’s role in that conversation showed his journey from Tainan, Taiwan to the global AI industry in the US. His appearance in Chapel Hill showed not only how far NVIDIA has come and how entrepreneurs can shape technology and innovation.
