AAPI in Gaming Launches First-Ever AAPI Steam Sale to Spotlight Underrepresented Developers

From May 1–10, AAPI Heritage Month is getting a major moment in gaming with the launch of the first-ever AAPI Steam Sale, a curated event spotlighting games created by Asian American and Pacific Islander developers. Featuring titles such as Melatonin, 1000xRESIST, Venba, and Battle Chef Brigade, the sale represents both a celebration of creative talent and a broader push for visibility in an industry where AAPI developers are still too often overlooked.

AAPI organizes the initiative in Gaming, a rapidly growing community of more than 3,500 members supported by the International Game Developers Association. The organization has built partnerships with companies and advocacy groups, including Nexon, LatinX in Gaming, and Black in Gaming, and has also hosted events at major industry gatherings, including Game Developers Conference 2025 and Game Developers Conference 2026.

Games like Venba, which explores immigration and family through food and storytelling, or 1000xRESIST, a science-fiction narrative deeply informed by diaspora and intergenerational trauma, demonstrate the creative range and emotional depth these developers bring to the medium. Others, like Battle Chef Brigade and Melatonin, showcase genre innovation and artistic experimentation that show traditional expectations of what representation looks like in games.

More than a storefront promotion, the AAPI Steam Sale represents a growing movement within the industry: one that insists visibility matters not just for players searching for themselves in games, but for creators trying to build sustainable careers in an industry that has historically marginalized them.

As conversations around diversity in gaming continue to evolve, initiatives like this offer a tangible way to support change, not just through discussion, but through discovery, community-building, and direct support for developers shaping the future of interactive storytelling.
