AANN is inviting Asian American Middle and High School Students to apply for our team as volunteer video editors, writers/interviewers, animators, and marketers.

Applications are accepted year round until teams reach capacity. Volunteers will receive community service hours according to their contributions to various projects. Students will have access to leadership development seminars, networking opportunities, and invaluable experience working in a collaborative team environment. There are also opportunities to interview and interact with high-profile people. Past interviewees have been Sean Reyes, the Attorney General of Utah, Paul Hsu, the Chairman of the Hsu Educational Foundation and member of President Bush’s Small Business National Advisory Board, and Dan Forest, the former Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina.

Every volunteer at AANN is expected to attend weekly meetings on Monday evening, as well as complete their assignments in a timely manner, maintain communication with  teammates, and equally contribute to each project. A good candidate is someone who is excited to learn, works well with others, and can go above and beyond expectations. 

 

  1. INTIAL APPLICATION: Interested parties will submit a full application to AANN and include times for a Zoom interview. If the applicant is chosen by the Editor in Chief and/or Executive Producer for further consideration, applicant will receive an email to schedule a Zoom interview. If the applicant is not chosen for further consideration, they will receive notification through email.
  2. ZOOM INTERVIEW: The applicant will meet with a member of AANN and answer a series of interview questions. Applicants will also have the chance to ask any questions they may have about their potential role. The Zoom interview will be recorded.
  3. REVIEW BY BOARD: The recorded Zoom interview will be viewed by the CEO and Board of AANN. A final decision will be made at this stage. Review of all Zoom interviews typically takes 1-2 weeks. 
  4. APPLICANT ACCEPTED: Accepted applicants will receive notification as well as further instructions. If the applicant is not chosen for further consideration, they will receive notification through email. Applicants are selected for positions based on merits, competitiveness, leadership, experiences, and alignment with AANN’s core values: highlighting Asian American Accomplishments and bringing news from a new perspective.



  • Typically 1-2 hours per week
  • Post several times a week of AANN Instagram, Facebook, and Linkedin original content (article summary, quote from an interview, candid from Team meeting, video sneak peek, full video, interview preview, hiring calls, etc)
  • Post relevant stories each week and engage the audience
  • Reformat posts to best suit each social media platform’s algorithm
  • Engage with the audience on social media by liking comments and responding to them
  • Leverage personal connections and help AANN increase its audience

  • Typically 1-3 hours per week
  • Edit videos for Instagram, Facebook, and/or Youtube
  • Film videos: Set up lighting and backdrop, set up two camera angles, adjust camera settings, frame subject correctly
  • Edit videos: Cut out irrelevant clips, add titles, fix lighting and sound, add transitions, edit color grading if necessary, etc…
  • Export and publish videos: Upload to google drive, Youtube, etc… with proper description and tags
  • Have an understanding of video editing software (ex: DaVinci Resolve)
  • Use Canva to format video backgrounds and thumbnails

*Video editors may work remotely. However, editors who would like to be part of the camera crew or cast must be from the Raleigh-Durham Area in North Carolina in order to access the film studio.*

The roles of a staff writer vary from week to week, depending on the projects assigned. There are two kinds of projects that can be assigned: Interview pieces and Original AANN Productions.

  • Typically 1-3 hours per week
  • If a project is not assigned, write one opinion or informational article per week oriented to an Asian American audience; topics can range from politics to culture.
  • If an Original Video is assigned,  collaborate on a thoroughly researched script that fulfills the requirements of the outline provided by the Managing Editor.
  • If an Interview Project is assigned, collaborate on interview questions both specific to the interviewee and general about their success. A writer will also be assigned to attend the live interview and take thorough notes, which will be used to write an article about the interviewee.
  • Finish writing/editing designated parts on time and with as little delay as possible. 
  • Actively participate in weekly brainstorming with the writing team
  • Attend weekly general, editing, and brainstorming meetings  
  • Maintain constant communication with Managing Editor as needed

If an Interview Project is assigned, an Interviewer will adopt the following roles in addition to their role as a Staff Writer.

  • Leverage connections to initiate interviews with successful, inspiring Asian American Leaders or non-Asians people who have widespread impact on the Asian American Community
  • Research potential interviewees and their background. Work with the writing team to help create interview questions relevant to the interviewee
  • Email, follow up, and confirm with interviewee to confirm interview time, place, topic, and any other expectations, ie: (lighting and sound for Zoom meetings, attire, a cup of coffee for our series)
  • Coordinate with the Managing Editor to schedule a writer to join the meeting/interview and take notes (ie: send a set date out and whoever can go, will go. If no one is available, have another person on the interview team take notes)
  • Make the interviewee feel comfortable and relaxed

*Interviewers may work remotely. However, interviewers who would like to be part of the in-person interview team must be from the Raleigh-Durham Area in North Carolina in order to access the film studio.*

  • 4-5 Hours
  • Draw various 2D animations in collaboration with a team of 3-4 animators for documentaries, informational videos, social media, and interviewers
  • Follow style guidelines for specific projects
  • Provide creative input and expertise to help streamline processes
  • If no animation projects are assigned, assist social media team by drawing graphics and animating breaking stories
